FYI Norm Pattiz – pronounced “Pattis” not “Puh-teez”. He was one of the original producers of American Top 40 – And yeah, he’s repurposing all the biggies. Whoop de doo….

As far as Edison Research goes – look up Tom Webster – who is a HUGE champion of podcast and conducts Edison’s research studies. I think he would have something to say about you calling his research nonsense. He’s spoken at New Media Expo and a number of the Podcamp events as well as many other places about his podcast research.

You really have a hard on for not liking the most popular shows don’t you? They need to be talked about same as everything else, you have the opposite problem of what you accuse this show of doing, you only want to hear about shows no one has heard about. It’s like a hipster who hates popular music.
If you paid attention you would notice we didn’t call it nonsense research, but highly suspect considering the relationship to Pattiz and his companies that stand to profit from Edison’s research. Could all be above board, but it’s worth it to challenge those numbers. Just because he went to NMX and a Podcamp doesn’t alleviate that potential danger especially if its all based on the same research funded by the same source.

Let’s first talk about the issue at hand: You’re right, you never said the research was nonsense. But you present a bit of a conspiracy theory, which I’m disagreeing with, based on my knowledge of Edison Research, and the person whom I know oversees the podcast research. Have you taken a look at Edison research’s podcast studies? If not – here’s a link:

You’ll notice it’s funded by Edison and Arbitron (the radio ratings company). Both of whom have more of an interest in being unbiased then in being beholden to any specific company – Arbitron as a radio ratings company, and Edison which also does a lot of political research. That person – Tom Webster – has presented this research in many places that podcasters congregate, that’s all I’m saying – and that hopefully gives it some weight in the podcast community. It’s actually quite positive for podcasting in general. So wouldn’t it have been better to say “hey – thanks for pointing out where this comes from – I’ll look into it further” instead of immediately coming at me in your first paragraph like an attack dog who thinks his owner is being threatened?
So – that brings us to this: Why are you getting personal and nasty about your perception of my opinions about what I’d like to hear from your show or what you perceive I listen to? That had nothing to do with my criticism of the story you are talking about on this show – so I think that’s out of line. My comments here did not attack you personally – I was pointing out your need to do more research. But since you DO seem to think I’m a hipster who listens to unpopular podcasts – let me correct you on that. I listen to everything from Adam Carolla to the Nerdist to repurposed NPR stuff to podcasts from some of the pioneers of podcasting (some popular, some not so much). I have an interest in all podcasts and that’s why I listen to your show.
The next time someone criticizes you, I hope you’ll step back and take a deep breath before going on the defensive and attacking them personally.

It just occured to me that my “whoop de do” was misinterpreted, it was intended as agreement with you on Norm Pattiz’ new website, like “big deal this bigwig radio guy starts a podcast network late in the game”. So maybe that is why you got hostile. But I’ll let my other comment stand because you really got nasty in the beginning there, and the rest of my comment is still valid.
